Review of "Side Effects"

Image
A Glib slapdash review of Steven Soderbergh's supposed last film... Side Effects Directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum and others, Side Effects is a decent movie that doesn't really aspire to be much more than it is, an homage to 70's psycho-dramas of the Brian DePalma variety. It does this very well, as the script keeps you wondering who is lying, who is telling the truth. What it lacks in visual panache it makes up for by letting Jude Law chew scenery in the style of his choosing which is a sort of restrained Michael Caine type characterization. Rooney Mara remains a bit of a cypher to me, her acting is very low key and she takes you by surprise even though you know how it's all going to go down. The Channing Tatum character is a Mcguffin all on his own. Worth renting if you can make it to one of the few remaining video stores in the world.
